The evolution of tinted glass began with metallic spray-on coatings and early window films. The energy crisis of the 1970s accelerated demand for improved solar-control solutions, leading manufacturers to develop more durable films and enhanced adhesive technologies.

A breakthrough came with metallized films, which used vacuum-deposited layers of metals such as aluminum and nickel-chromium alloys to reflect infrared radiation and improve heat rejection. Although these products significantly increased solar control, they often created highly reflective, mirror-like appearances and could interfere with electronic signals.
Today's tinted glass products are far more sophisticated than earlier generations, giving greater control over both aesthetics and performance. By pairing advanced tinting technologies with high-performance low-e coatings, modern glazing systems can reduce solar heat gain, lower cooling loads, control glare and improve occupant comfort while preserving daylight and views.
At the same time, they offer enhanced durability, design flexibility and a wider range of color options, allowing to fine-tune a building's appearance and performance without many of the compromises associated with traditional tinting solutions.
In addition to supporting energy performance, tinted glass plays a significant role in shaping a building's visual identity. Oftentimes, tinted glass is used to complement surrounding materials, manage reflectivity and create a desired aesthetic, while maintaining daylighting and views. Certain glass colors can also enhance privacy and visual comfort, making tinted glass a popular choice for healthcare, education, corporate and other occupant-focused environments.
As tinted glass technology continues to evolve, there’s increasing flexibility to combine color, daylighting and solar control in ways that support both sustainability and design objectives. What began as a simple strategy for reducing glare has become an important design and performance tool within the modern building envelope.
